The Indian national carrier might have a reputation for scrappy service, and patchy cabins, threadbare seats and questionable mechanics, but Air India remains one of the safest airlines in the world, and in 2004 transported nearly 5 million people, and offers some of the best fares available to some 44 destinations across India and South East Asia.

Economy class offers a seat pitch of 31 inches, although some passengers claim that it is even less. Drinks are served throughout the flight, although the airline's crew to passenger ratio is one of the lowest in aviation, so service is generally fairly poor. One thing that Air India does particularly well is food however, and the on board meals in economy class are heralded as being as good as business class on most other airlines.

In business class you get a 48-inch seat pitch, meals served on real china, and sky phones and televisions for all passengers. The crew-passenger ratio is much higher than in economy class, so service is far better.

First Class offers lounge access, and a wide variety of meals and drinks to choose from during the flight. Seats are very comfortable with a seat pitch of 78 inches. The cabin only seats 16, so service can be personalised.
